Consider the captcha code.........

Captcha

So going through my comments a few weeks ago i noticed one that hinted to me to disable the captcha code function when people commented on my blog.........i have to thank you...as well, i didn't even realise it was enabled.

This function DRIVES ME INSANE when i go and comment on other blogs, and then to find out its enabled on mine..well you can guess what i did....yep its now disabled, bye bye captcha.

Now obviously i do get the odd bit of spam through..but hey, doesn't everyone...but i do think that having this highly annoying and frankly time consuming feature on your blog sometimes hinders people from making comments. I have to admit at times i have given up leaving a comment as the captcha has been so bloody unreadable....how can i prove I'm human if i can't even read it!!!

Anyway if you've moved from the old blogger interface to the new you may find that the feature has sneakily turned itself back on in the process.

To check if it is enabled and to disable the feature if you wish simply:

Click on the settings link
Click on posts and comments
Where it says 'show word verification' you will see a drop down box - select no to stop the pain!!

Whats your thoughts on the captcha...good idea, hate the thing, drives you mad?

  3. Hi everyone,

With due respect, I don't think you understand the concept of ReCaptcha. reCAPTCHA improves the process of digitizing books by sending words that cannot be read by computers to the Web in the form of CAPTCHAs for humans to decipher. More specifically, each word that cannot be read correctly by a computer is placed on an image and used as a CAPTCHA.

Each new word that cannot be read correctly by a computer is given to a user in conjunction with another word for which the answer is already known. The user is then asked to read both words. If they solve the one for which the answer is known, the system assumes their answer is correct for the new one.

So, you just need to enter your best guess for the two words, there is not a single correct answer. If you still find it too hard, you can just skip to a new reCaptcha or play the sound of it and just type what you hear.

Of course, it is a lot easier not to use it, but recaptcha is not just an annoying tool, it's a useful one that we will all benefit from in the near future.

  4. With due respect back....I actually do fully understand the concept of the captcha system and its uses..... and yes i know you can skip to a new captcha if you cant read the first one. Im just stating that in terms of commenting on blogs.....for quite alot of people having to go through this process puts people off, especially if you comment alot on blogs.

Iv simply stated my opinion and given bloggers the option to check themselves if its a function they wish to have.

  6. I hate them. They've become unreadable now and akismet usually catches all spam, for me anyways. I dunno if blogger has that. So I have no captcha!

  7. It took me awhile to realize that too. It does have a risk for some unwanted spam comments but blogger does a good job of detecting spam. :) I usually like to comment more on blogs that don't have captcha.

  8. Oh how I hate them! I can totally see the use of them for certain areas of the web, ticket sales (though that drives me mad too) etc, but for blogs I think its too much, especially as they keep getting more and more flipping indecipherable, which often puts me off commenting all together, which surely defeats their purpose!
I've set my comments to openId users only and removed word verification, and I have had no problems with computer generated spam at all, and if I did I would just press delete!

    1. Yeah neither have i.....i dont think there's a huge need for mass security when you comment on a blog but i do see the need for them elsewhere like for registering for sites and forums etc.

  9. I agree they are a pain and yes I also understand the importance, but sometimes I dont bother to leave a comment if I have to jump through this hoop.
Half the time I have to click it several times to read what it says anyway; highly annoying.
Just off to check mine now too...and turn it off!!!!!
